REVIEW
Not too long ago, I lamented on how comic books adapted to the silver screen have a nasty habit of being terrible.
Well, it’s hard not to like the X-Men. The movies have stellar casts, the special effects are top notch, and the movies try to stay true to the original comic books. That’s good. Yeah, the movies come out a little cheesy, with the over-coolification of Wolverine, the nauseating make-up and boring hairstyles, and dialogue that doesn’t translate well to film. But I can still dig it!
I mean, how can you NOT love Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen facing off against each other? How can you NOT enjoy watching beautiful actresses in tight uniforms using their magic powers to subdue and terrorize? I’d like to be restrained by Storm and Jean Grey at the same time. Who wouldn’t?*
X-Men 3, looks promising as one of the few ‘blockbusters’ coming out this year to have a pulse. I Watch Stuff has a trailer video of Wolverine going head to head with a Sentinel! Have no idea what I just said? Oh, boy, maybe this flick isn’t for you!
Or is it? The X-Men films are all notable for portraying vivid themes of xenophobia and individuality themes that everyone can identify with on some level. Aren’t we all a little like the X-Men? I know I am. I may not have adamantium claws, or telepathic powers, but at 78 kg, I’m slightly heavier than the average adult male, and I can mix rum cocktails pretty fast.
