If Bride of Chucky did anything worthwhile to what is otherwise another useless slasher (notice I didn’t use the word ‘horror’) franchise it was the addition of Jennifer Tilly to crank up the level of camp.
Seed of Chucky knocks it up (pun intended) a little more by bringing in the real Jennifer Tilly (and her cleavage) to star as herself in addition to Tiffany, Chucky’s plastic plaything.
It’s basically the killer doll version of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare in which, if you didn’t see it (For shame!) Freddy Krueger comes to life on the set of a Freddy Krueger movie. Only here it’s Chucky and Tiffany and child.
If you recall the end of Bride of Chucky (Didn’t see it? For shame!) Tiffany gives birth. Well, our little bundle of terror has grown up some, and is on a mission to find his or her birth parents. You see, having no genitals, our little “fella” has no idea whether, in a nice nod to Ed Wood, he’s a Glen or a Glenda.
Even being a fan of campy horror flicks I’ve gotta say that this movie is messed UP! First we have Redman playing himself as a rapper cum director filming a movie about the Virgin Mary for whom he wants to cast sexpot Tilly, already voicing Tiffany in the movie in a movie breaking the fourth wall self referential Chucky flick, as the lead. Then we have the famous killer dolls who want to possess their human bodies. And on top of it all, there’s our little Glen, da struggling with the moralities of being a killer doll and struggling the entire time with his or her gender identity.
There’s a lot going on in this movie, and all mixed together it’s undeniably bizarre, even for a genre flick. I’m able to recognize that it’s an awful movie, but I can’t help but absolutely love it (maybe it’s because of John Waters, who stars as a ruthless paparazzo). So it gets a middle of the road rating.
