I was not expecting this movie to be good, but I had no idea it would be this bad. This is the moment that movie reviewers like to throw in little puns like “belly-up”, “bottom feeder”, and “eww gross! It smells like dead fish!” This movie made Shrek look like Lawrence of Arabia, and I hated Shrek.

The story is uninteresting and convoluted, and I could explain to you, but it’s not important in the movie, so I’d just be wasting time. What’s important to note is that Will Smith plays “Will Smith as a fish”, Robert DeNiro plays “Robert DeNiro as a shark”, et cetera, et cetera. The characters in the movie are non-entities they garner no sympathy from the audience when all they are are parodies of the actors portraying them.

Once again, DreamWorks has cast the importance of a good story aside in favour of a star-studded cast and an endless stream of pop culture references. It’s also brimming with endless product placements and a ridulous r&b pop soundtrack that, in 10 years, will prove that movies like this which date themselves have no real shelf life.

It’s hard to complain about technical details with these movies, as it does look good. It’s not Finding Nemo good, however. The ocean scenes aren’t as vibrantly alive, the lighting is less emotional and cinematic, and the characters are slightly more hideous in that they are caricatures of their respective actors and, for some reason have fingers and hair.

It’s a bland, unfunny illustration of committee-thinking appealing to the huddled ignorant masses. They threw in every bit of mass-marketed pop culture they could squeeze in, but forgot to add any heart.
