Enduring Love is a stalker thriller based on the novel of the same name by Ian McEwan.
After a traumatic accident involving a hot-air balloon, the characters played by Daniel Craig and Rhys Ifans are suddenly intertwined in an eerie and uncomfortable obsession.
Ifans becomes enamoured with Craig, and it’s a frightening, obsessive, unhealthy (and unreciprocated) love. Life becomes miserable for Craig when his obsession with the accident begins to destroy his relationship with Samantha Morton.
All the actors all give incredibly commanding performances, especially Ifans who is known more as a comedic actor with his roles in Notting Hill and Human Nature. I always enjoy watching him, and am still waiting for the day when he will be officially cast as Graham Chapman.
Oftentimes the thriller takes a back seat to the characters’ pontifications on “what love is” and I’m sure these are themes reflected in the book, but as a movie it is far too heady to be a truly successful suspense film, and ultimately, though enjoyable, the film can’t decide if it’s simply a literary reflection or a suspenseful thriller.
