Year 180 AD. The Roman army is under the command of the general Maximus ( Russel Crowe ) defeats the Germanic rebels. The dying emperor Marcus Aurelius ( Richard Harris ) asks the commander to take over the empire after his death and make Rome a republic again. The emperor’s jealous son Commodus ( Joaquin Phoenix ) kills his father and gives the order to murder Maximus, his wife and son. The general manages to survive, goes to a gladiator school, where he constantly wants to avenge the deaths of his loved ones.
