Kontroll is Hungary’s most successful movie, and it’s no surprise. It has a definite possibility of developing a huge International cult following the same way that Run Lola Run has done. It’s definitely the type of movie that can be enjoyed with multiple screenings as the viewer gets to know Bulcsú, narcoleptic Muki, lecherous Lecsó, naive Tibi, the aptly-named Professor, and the romatnic hero Bulcsú our sloppy gang of Budapest subway ticket takers.
The problem with the movie is that’s it’s really two movies in one. On its most enjoyable level, it’s a comedy. We are treated to the misadventures of these eccentric tunnel-dwelling ticket inspectors, some of which haven’t seen sunlight for days. We even have a rival team of inspectors who are all bigger, tougher, and have nicer uniforms that would seem like a lame movie cliché if it wasn’t handled so realistically under the natural grit and grime of the flickering fluorescent lights.
On another level, the movie is a thriller focusing on various mysterious deaths on the tracks. Are they suicides or murders? Bulcsú is at the heart of this aspect of the story, and it has a few exciting moments, but it otherwise distracts from the earnestness of a very realistic comedy, and has too many surreal dreamlike trances. There is no real story to speak of just a series of incidental events involving our crew with a few hints along the way that something sinister lurks behind the shadows. This episodic quality works to the film’s advantage because the most rewarding thing about Kontroll is how original it is. Guaranteed you haven’t seen anything quite like it, and I look forward to seeing it again.
