Two men (Cary Elwes and co-writer Leigh Whannell) wake up together in a room where they are chained to opposite walls. On the floor between them lies a bloody corpse. They spend the entire movie in this room trying to figure out why they are there and how they can get out. They are the victims of an elaborate tortuous game a lesson in morality from a mysterious villain. The corpse holds a gun and each man has a hacksaw. Whoever cuts off his own leg first, and reaches the gun, will live.
Comparisons to Se7en are inevitable as both movies, in addition to sharing a visual style, both revolve around a serial killer who philosophizes tales of immorality through elaborate plots in order to make his victims suffer. The audience is treated to a montage of the killer’s other horribly cruel games that make you think, “you sick bastard!” before realizing that the screenwriters (Whannell and director Wan) are just as sick for thinking them up.
Danny Glover plays the police detective who is tracking the killer down, and he is as understated and cool as always. Elwes is always entertaining, but he hams it up here. His overacting is almost laughable, and in truth he does provoke a few chuckles in moments where they are are unintentional.
It’s not a great movie, but it’s a lot of fun and undeniably creepy. It unfortunately may not reach the cult status of Se7en simply because Se7en came first, but it’s just as good, even if it’s a little more extreme in its campiness.
