This is Danny Boyle’s first film, and I wasn’t expecting it to be as stylish as his later, larger budgeted films, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that, although unquestionably more modest in scope, Shallow Grave marks the beginning of a very artistic film career for Mister B.
What’s starts out as a Hitchcockian dilemma reminiscent of The Trouble with Harry soon spirals into something much more grave and disturbing (puns on ‘spiral’ and ‘grave’ most definitely intended) when in addition to a body, a trio of flatmates also come across a suitcase overflowing with money.
Morality, greed, friendship, paranoia, and mental well-being are all mixed and cooked into a big, sloppy, devious haggis of suspense.
What I enjoyed most was that I never knew what to expect next. I’ve seen enough crappy Hollywood thrillers to be able to guess the endings of most of them without even watching them, but not this one. More than several times I found myself saying, “well I certainly didn’t expect that!”
In addition to Danny Boyle, Ewan McGregor also makes a splash here in one of his earliest screen roles (the first of several for director Boyle) and he proves that he’s always been the same rogue with the devilish grin as we’ve come to know him.
