REVIEW

Withnail and I is often labelled as ‘the funniest English movie ever made’, but that’s a highly contentious issue. After all, it’s the country that gave birth to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though there’s a similar undercurrent in Withnail and I.

It’s bizarre, it’s unbelievably quotable, and it’s a terrifying look at near madness.

Produced by George Harrison, it’s an autobiographical script from director Bruce Robinson, who wrote the screenplay at the end of the 60s, but made the movie in the 80s.

I’m not going to say what it’s about, other than two friends go for a vacation in the country, but this isn’t like anything you’ve seen before after watching this film, no part of you would ever want to go to the country in England. It pours rain nearly all the time, its muddy and clammy and don’t think you can enjoy a pint in the local country pub, because the locals don’t want anything to do with you.

It didn’t make that much money at the box office, but as it’s become enshrined in the festering bucket of cult classics, Withnail and I has been immortalized as the definitive British comedy. Wait, more like the dark underside of British comedy. The stinking, filthy underbelly of English comedy that reeks of truth. We’re not from London, you know.

I say

It’s not for everyone, and it’d be easy just to ignore it, but With nail and I demands your full attention. I need to give it another watch.

See it for

Richard Griffiths, who you might know as Uncle Vernon from Harry Potter,
